Unlocking the Power of Brainspotting Online

One of the benefits of utilizing Brainspotting online to treat anxiety, depression, or trauma-related issues, is that it is very easy to see the client’s eyes and facial movements. With Brainspotting, a brainspotting therapist tracks how a client’s eyes move and stare while they are talking about subject matter that brings up activating feelings.

Part of the philosophy behind Brainspotting is that where we look affects our emotions. You can try it out on your own right now. Notice that when you talk you may look in all different places. Sometimes you look at the person you are talking to, sometimes you look up, off to the side, or down. We don’t tend to stay on one spot for too long. But if we slow down and stay with one spot, we will often find that there are feelings associated with that spot.

As a brainspotting therapist, we are tracking those eye movements and when we are having a session online it can be very easy to see what is happening, whereas in person there is generally a bit more distance between therapist and client. Likewise, if we are using a pointer to help the client hold their eye position, it can be very easy for them to see and stay with the spot we have identified because the pointer is much more visible.

Guiding Clients & Tracking Reflexes

Another essential element of brainspotting is tracking the "reflexes" that begin to show in the client's face as the session progresses. These often include blinking, swallowing, and other physical expressions. This shows that the client is reprocessing memories and feelings that help to relieve the unwanted sensations. It is helpful for the therapist to have a close view of the client. This allows them to explore the physical expressions that are taking place and guide the client as needed.

Post-Session Comfort & Self-Care

Sometimes after a Brainspotting session, the client can feel tired or “spaced out”, or need time to process the session. It can be comforting to be in the familiarity of your own home and be able to end the session and be in a safe and containing space that allows for taking the time needed to rest and digest all that has occurred. It is also a bonus to not have to drive right after receiving Brainspotting!
